The player who was benched at the back end of last season to save Wanderers from a £100,000 transfer fee to Liverpool, such were the dire straits of the clubs financials, has been a key figure for Bolton.

The defensive midfielder now appears settled, playing some of the best football of his career and is a key member of Phil Parkinson's side, attracting admiration from other clubs:

“Bolton have done a lot for me in this last couple of years, the club, the fans, everyone, so whatever speculation there was out there doesn’t concern me."  said Spearing,

“I get paid by Bolton and that is where my priorities lie

I concentrate on football and want to do the best I can for my career.”

Winner of Sky Bet's League One Goal of the Month award for August, Bolton captain Jay Spearing is enjoying football again, after a season of uncertainty that ended in relegation.

The 27-year-old has been in fine form for the Trotters this season, scoring two stunning goals in eight games from midfield, positioning Bolton well in the table as the club look at gaining promotion at the first time of asking.

Alex Jones finished a very close second behind Spearing, with 22-year-old, on-loan from Championship side Birmingham City, has made an impressive start to life in League One, with his nomination for League One Player of the Month (August and September) being testament to that.

The versatile striker has netted six goals in just eight matches for The Valiants, winning a penalty for his side just two minutes after making his debut on August 16, as well as bagging a brace during Port Vale's 3-1 win over Scunthorpe United in later August

After the match, Port Vale manager Bruno Ribeiro praised Jones' performance:

"He [Jones] was fantastic, he scored two goals and worked hard..

he is one more option for a winger".
