The Future's Bright At Bolton

I don't know if you have noticed but there has been a lot more emphasis on youth up at the Reebok Stadium nowadays with Sam Allardyce, Chris Sulley and company keen to develop the young lads from around the area and from further afield.

A few weeks ago we saw Londoner Ricky Shakes make his full Bolton debut at Yeovil Town and this was closely followed by a cameo appearance from the highly talented Dubliner Joey O'Brien late on in that same game.

Local lad Jason Talbot was also included amongst the substitutes down at Huish Park that night and is currently enjoying a productive spell on loan with Championship side Derby County.

It almost makes fellow academy graduates Kevin Nolan (22) and Nicky Hunt (21) seem like Premiership veterans in comparison but any youth developement can only be good for the club so credit must go to the backroom staff for discovering the talent which we see before us.

Long gone are the days when Boltonians, Mancunians or Liverpudlians dominated the Wanderers youth team. Now we see Portuguese, French, Polish, Swedish kids in there too with one such example in Ricardo Vaz-Te having already been the first foreign graduate to make his Premiership debut against Middlesbrough last season.

There is still of course the homegrown Bolton lads to call upon such as Sam Ashton, Craig Knowles and Danny Stott to name a few so the local element will always be there despite the lures of other clubs in the area such as Manchester United and Liverpool.

Young Rob Sissons is another making waves having already been given a chance at England U17 level earlier this year.

Whether they be from Bolton or Barcelona this is the most exciting group of young players we have had since the days of Siddall, Walsh, Whatmore, Jones and Allardyce himself.

Here is a list of all the youth team players to be handed their debuts since Sam Allardyce took over as Bolton manager back in October 1999.
