Bolton Missed The Boat

Sam Allardyce believes that Bolton Wanderers should have added a new training ground to their agenda when they moved to the Reebok Stadium eight years ago.

Allardyce describes the lack of investment in training facilities by the previous board of directors as a "missed opportunity" which has hampered the club's youth development system.

"This club missed a massive opportunity under the last board of directors to build a state-of-the-art training ground with a state-of-the-art stadium.

"If they had taken £5million out of the total cost of that stadium and used that money in a training facility, you would see a lot more young players in the team. We have done a major job on hugely limited resources.

Allardyce says that potential new scholars snub Bolton's advances in favour of clubs who have better training facilities in the area such as the two Manchester clubs, Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool.

"Most of the players we want, we cannot attract purely because our facilities. They come and have a look and say 'Sorry but Manchester United, Blackburn, Liverpool and Manchester City's are all better than yours'. We lose out on the first touch and they cannot see beyond the facilities."

Kevin Nolan, Nicky Hunt and Ricardo Vaz-Te have all had the benefit of first team experience having come through the Academy ranks at Bolton in recent times. Many more such as Ricky Shakes, Joey O'Brien and Jason Talbot are on the verge of the first team squad and have spent time out on loan with Coca Cola League clubs to gain experience.
