Lancashire Cup Returns Tonight

Last updated : 16 August 2004 By Mark Heys
Lancashire Cup action returns tonight with Bolton Wanderers taking on near neighbours Preston North End at the County Ground in Leyland.

Wanderers have won the competition eleven times in their history - the last instance of which came in August 1990 ironically against North End with Bolton running out 2-1 winners.

The Lancashire Cup winning team that year consisted of: Dave Felgate, Phil Brown, David Burke, Barry Cowdrill, Mark Came, Mark Winstanley, Scott Green, Steve Thompson, David Reeves, Tony Philliskirk, Julian Darby and Stuart Storer.

Bolton haven't participated in the competition since the summer of 1993 when a Dave Bamber inspired Blackpool team ended the Trotters hopes in the third game with a 3-1 win at Burnden Park.

The competition itself hasn't run since 1998 as clubs claimed it effected their busy fixture schedule but now it makes it's return with clubs expected to play the reserve or younger members of their squads. However rules state that seven of those must be fully registered professionals.

BOLTON: Kevin Poole, Ricky Shakes, Jason Talbot, Anthony Barness, Fernando Hierro, Duong Thach, Reda Kribib, Joey O'Brien, Ricardo Vaz-Te, Les Ferdinand, Michael Bridges
