Bolton Wanderers Reserves 2 Liverpool Reserves 1

A late goal from Portuguese striker Ricardo Vaz-Te gave Bolton Wanderers reserves their first FA Premier Reserve League win in a month as an experienced Trotters team overcame Liverpool in Leyland last night.

The 18-year old striker struck with just minutes on the clock remaining to give the Wanderers second string only their second league win of the year so far. Earlier on in the game goals from Khalilou Fadiga of Bolton and Liverpool substitute Paul Barratt threatened to end the tie on level pegging.

Bolton had only three youngsters in their starting eleven for this game with the rest being made up of experienced professionals who are on the fringes of the Trotters first team. Names such as Ivan Campo, Radhi Jaidi, Henrik Pedersen, Anthony Barness, Julio Cesar, Florent Laville, Kevin Poole and Fadiga all started the match.

Having had much more experience than their Merseyside neighbours it was understandable that Bolton should be the team to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

A Fadiga free kick was turned away by the Liverpool keeper Paul Harrison, whilst young Frenchman Bedi Buval missed a clear sight on goal after a mistake by the Reds American defender Zak Whitbread.

Only Whitbread, Richie Partridge and former Bolton loan player Jon Otsemobor had any considerable experience in the Reds team as most of the fringe players where in Germany for Liverpool's Champions League game against Bayer Leverkusen.

Ricardo Vaz-Te, Joey O'Brien and Ivan Campo all had chances in the closing moments of the opening period but a combination of good defending, rotten luck and inaccuracy ensured that things remained goalless going into the interval.

Liverpool's best effort of the opening period came shortly before the break but a free kick by England youth player David Mannix was saved excellently by Bolton's veteran goalkeeper Kevin Poole.

Former Auxerre and Club Brugge winger Fadiga gave Bolton the lead on 50 minutes as the Trotters began the second period as they had ended the first. The African midfielder saw his shot deflect off Whitbread and wrong foot Harrison in the Liverpool goal.

The lead was short lived however as substitute Paul Barratt, on for Partridge, got the reslilient young Merseysiders back on level terms on 57 minutes after Ryan Wilkie's initial shot had been saved

Reds youth academy player Phil Townley could have further increased the Liverpool goal tally for the evening but he managed to fluff his end product after a fine run on goal.

Vaz-Te and O'Brien where both denied by the Liverpool keeper Harrison in the closing stages but the Bolton striker Vaz-Te took advantage of a mistake by ex-Wanderer Otsemobor to grab Bolton a last gasp victory.
