Bolton Wanderers claimed a useful point in today's FA Premiership clash with Newcastle United at St James Park, which meant a third clean sheet in a row and left the Magpies still searching for their first Premiership win of the season.

The home side had lots of the possession but Wanderers excellent defensive display was enough to frustrate the Toon Army and move the Trotters up to 12th position in the league.

Newcastle desparate to gain their first home win, put Wanderers under pressure early on. Gary Speed could have given the home side the lead with only two minutes on the clock but his header from Laurent Robert's free kick cannoned back off the crossbar to give Bolton an early warning. Andy Griffin then tested the Trotters goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen from long range but the Big Finn comfortably saved from the Wigan-born defender.

Bolton midfielder Jay-Jay Okocha then tested the Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given at the other end with a superb free kick which was turned away for a corner by the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper.

Alan Shearer then broke clear of the Bolton defenders Emerson Thome and Bruno N'Gotty shortly before half time but Jaaskelainen was on hand to stop the former England international from opening the scoring.

Newcastle again hit the bar shortly after the restart, former Ipswich Town defender Titus Bramble saw his header come back off the woodwork for what would of been a rare goal for the 22-year old former England U21 international.

Kevin Davies, Jay-Jay Okocha and Youri Djorkaeff all had half chances for Bolton but nothing which was to trouble Given in the Magpies goal, Bolton's play this afternoon was to frustrate Newcastle and the plot seemed to have worked.

Newcastle had two chances to claim all three points late on but Kieron Dyer couldn't connect to Shola Ameobi's cross which was dealt with comfortably by the impressive Simon Charlton on his return to the Bolton starting line up. Thome and Jaaskelainen got into a mix up late on but luckily for the Bolton players the loose ball went out for a goal kick.

A useful point for Bolton, the only critisism I have would be that we aren't creating enough in the final third, both Kevin Davies and Henrik Pedersen worked hard but the chances put to them are very few and far between and in this league you need goals, having said that a point at St James Park is no disgrace and is a good result for the team. I don't know whats going wrong with Newcastle but i beleive they will get out of trouble, I think the first win will kick start their season because you don't go from being a top six side to a bottom six side overnight.
