Liverpool 3 Bolton Wanderers 1

Liverpool intent on gaining revenge for their Carling Cup defeat by the Wanderers earlier in the month gained the advantage in this Boxing Day clash, ending Bolton's recent good run whilst also buying a bit more time for their manager who has been under some scrutiny recently.

Bolton where simply not at the races as three well headed goals by Sami Hyppia, Florent Sinama Pongolle and Vladimir Smicer gave the Reds the points over a lacklustre Wanderers side who looked a shadow of the team that had done so well in the previous weeks.

Manager Sam Allardyce was livid and confirmed he would be tempted to make changes for the next game against Leicester City. The big names Jay-Jay Okocha, Ivan Campo and Youri Djorkaeff where all withdrawn by Allardyce at Anfield as they proved less effective than normal which gave substitutes Ibrahim Ba, Henrik Pedersen and Stelios Giannakopoulos a chance to improve things but to little avail.

Hyppia gave Liverpool the lead on 30 minutes when he headed home a Danny Murphy corner past fellow countryman Jaaskelainen after finding himself unchecked by the Trotters defenders. Campo had a chance to pull Wanderers back into the game but he saw his header sail agonisingly wide. The problem with Bolton was they looked unusually edgy in defence, strange for a team who have gained many plaudits for their recent defensive displays.

Florent Sinama-Pongolle added the second for the Reds shortly after the restart when once again he was unmarked in the Wanderers penalty area to head home a cross by John Arne Riise past Jussi Jaaskelainen in the Bolton goal.

On 54 minutes a rare header from Vladimir Smicer more or less wrapped up the win for Liverpool as he once again unmarked, rose to head the ball past Jaaskelainen following Murphy's free kick.

Wanderers did get a consolation on 85 minutes when substitute Henrik Pedersen continued his run of goalscoring when he lashed home past Chris Kirkland with his left foot.

Sam Allardyce was not pleased with his Bolton side, maybe it was complacency after the recent good run or maybe it was just an off day, after all we can't always be the victors, we just have to make sure we keep our spirits up in time for Leicester's visit.
