Substitute Stelios Giannakopoulos showed no signs of tiredness from his successful European Championship campaign with Greece as he came back to domestic duty to fire home a second half equaliser for Bolton Wanderers.

The home side where on the backfoot for much of the first half and this was evident as early as the first few minutes of the game when Zaragoza midfielder Juan Jose Camacho fired in a low shot into the arms of the Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Gary Speed had a good chance to open his Wanderers goalscoring account in the 10th minute but the midfielder could not match accuracy to his header off an Ivan Campo free kick.

Yugoslavian striker Goran Drulic then had a golden opportunity in a one on one situation with Jaaskelainen but it was the Finnish international who was to react the quickest to the chance denying the striker a chance of opening the scoring for the Spanish side. Midfielder Juan Granero then wasted a good opportunity for the Copa Del Rey holders, firing over the crossbar even though he had a bit more time to make the opportunity more accurate whilst teammate Oscar Gonzalez also failed to get his 25th minute effort on target after being well set up by those around him.

Bolton seemed to be slightly overrun in midfield by the La Liga side but fortunately their end product in front of goal was not satisfactory meaning that it was still very open and could go either way.

Livewire Ricardo Gardner playing in a more attacking role for the afternoon had a good opportunity when stealing in at the far post from the left hand side but goalkeeper Luis Garcia Conda was quick to react to the chance.

The Trotters gave a debut to former England striker Les Ferdinand and the veteran striker proved to be a more than useful weapon in the air for the 45 minutes that he was on the pitch. On 34 minutes he rose well to meet an Okocha free kick but Garcia in the Zaragoza goal was equal to it.

Soon after the away side had taken the lead, a nice through ball from the midfield opened the Bolton defence up and striker Drulic was on hand to produce the most delicate of chips over the advancing Jaaskelainen to see the ball trickle into the net for the first goal despite the best efforts of Whites defender Radhi Jaidi to clear.

Sam Allardyce made changes at the interval with midfielder Kevin Nolan and striker Michael Bridges coming on for Radhi Jaidi and Les Ferdinand. Bolton had been playing a 3-5-2 system for the first period but the second half saw Hunt and Gardner return to a more defensive role with Cesar and N'Gotty being the two centre halfs. Nolan provided an extra body in the midfield area to stop the forward runs of the Zaragoza players and it seemed to have the desired effect stopping the Spaniards fluency when going forward.

Strikers Luciano Galletti and Drulic had early chances in the second period but both Jussi Jaaskelainen and Nicky Hunt did their best to deny the visitors from increasing their slender lead.

Referee Uraiah Rennie was forced to stop the game in the 57 minute for an avalanche of away substitutions and soon after Bolton themselves where tinkering with the shape of the team bringing on former Real Madrid ace Fernando Hierro and Tal Ben-Haim in place of Bruno N'Gotty and Nicky Hunt. Hierro took his natural role in the defensive line whilst Ben Haim took Hunt's role down the right full back flank.

Former Bolton loanee Javi Moreno then entered the fray for his first appearance in Zaragoza colours following his recent move from Atletico Madrid but was unable to impose himself on the game against his former teammates.

Nigerian trialist Blessing Kaku, Anthony Barness and Euro 2004 hero Stelios Giannakopoulos where all brought off the bench over a five minute period with former Ashdod man Kaku proving to be particularly impressive in his brief appearance managing a few nice touches and linking up well with the rest of the Bolton team.

Stelios was to make an immediate impact as with just 12 minutes remaining he latched onto a neat throughball by fellow sub Kaku and sent the ball underneath Zaragoza's goalkeeping substitute Jorge Zaparain to level the scores.

Fellow substitute Barness had a chance to win the game in the remaining few minutes but the former Chelsea and Charlton full back sent the ball high and wide into the south stand.

Not the best of games but certainly a good end to the pre-season campaign. No real superstars on show today but the positives are the successful return of Stelios and the influence of trialist Kaku. Pedersen, Barness and Nolan also returned after injury and seemed to make the most of their chance.
