Bolton Wanderers 1 Liverpool 0

Not quite as memorable as those "White Hot" days of 1993 or as comical as the Dean Holdsworth last minute effort of 2001 but nonetheless a win all the same for Bolton Wanderers against a very organised Liverpool team at the Reebok Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

A first half goal by Kevin Davies did all the damage to earn Bolton a hard fought 1-0 victory against their North West neighbours.

Liverpool started the game well with a flurry of possessional play which pinned Bolton back into defensive mode but despite the away side's good start they had to do without inspirational defender Sami Hyppia for most of the game as the Finnish international left the play through injury after 15 minutes after landing awkwardly under an earlier challenge from the Wanderers striker Davies.

The game was like a chess contest in the sense that the opposing team had to guess the next move of the team who was in possession and to Bolton's credit they sussed out the right moves very well.

On 17 minutes Stephen Warnock made a break down the Liverpool left hand side managing to shrug off the attentions of Bolton full back Nicky Hunt, the final delivery was perfect but Euro 2004 hot shot Milan Baros could not get a decent enough connection on the ball.

Five minutes later the Trotters also went close when former Everton captain Gary Speed had his shot blocked by Jamie Carragher following some good interplay by both Davies and Bruno N'Gotty.

Bolton skipper Jay-Jay Okocha then weaved a bit of his trickery to send the Liverpool defence all haywire but Greek midfielder Stelios Giannakopoulos, undoubtedly the smallest man on the pitch failed to connect to the resulting cross.

On 38 minutes the home side took the lead arguably against the run of play. The in form Henrik Pedersen made a fine run down the left hand side beating his marker Josemi all ends up before delivering a low cross into the area which eluded three Liverpool defenders finding it's way to the unmarked Davies who was able to control the ball and fire past Jerzy Dudek for the opener.

Shortly before half time England U21 international Nicky Hunt found himself upfield for Bolton and this produced an excellent volley on the turn by the young full back who had been fed through by the excellent Okocha.

The second half saw a more adventerous Bolton team who where willing to push forward more and frustrate their Merseyside opponents and this was clear sixty seconds after the interval when Dudek was to turn wide a long range goalbound effort from Davies.

Defender Radhi Jaidi and Okocha where to later test the Reds keeper whilst impressive debutant Luis Garcia fired wide for the away side when it looked like an equaliser was on the cards. The ex-Barcelona player later had the ball in the net but this was ruled out by referee Uraiah Rennie for offside.

In the closing stages as expected Liverpool pushed forward in the hope of an levelling goal but the half time substitute Djibril Cisse fired over from a good position and this was to sum up the Reds afternoon.
