Bolton began their tour of Malta with a 2-1 win over Birkirkara in the Floriana Cup thanks to goals from Youri Djorkaeff and Jay-Jay Okocha. However the win was marred when both Djorkaeff and young full back Nicky Hunt where taken to hospital with injuries.

Jay-Jay Okocha gave the away side the lead on four minutes when he picked up a loose ball to fire home the opening goal past despairing Stripes keeper Justin Haber who could only stop and admire the thunderbolt by the Nigerian International.

On 13 minutes Djorkaeff gave the Wanderers the lead making the scoreline 2-0 when he nodded the ball over the line after a mix up between a Birkirkara defender and the goalkeeper Haber, however in the process the French World Cup winner seemed to clash with the opposing goalkeeper and had to go off injured to what is initially thought to be a fractured cheekbone. Former French teammate Ibrahim Ba, on trial from AC Milan replaced his countryman.

Birkirkara trialist Harud Doda had a chance to reduce the deficit on 24 minutes but his shot flashed wide of Jussi Jaaskelainen's goal meaning Wanderers went in comfortable for the lead at Half-Time.

During the interval Trotters boss Sam Allardyce made some more changes to keep the momentum going in the intense heat with Ivan Campo and Jeff Smith replacing Simon Charlton and Jay-Jay Okocha.

Lino Galea did pull a goal back for the home side on 51 minutes when he spectacularly hooked a mis cued clearance by substitute Campo over the Bolton goalkeeper Jaaskelainen.

Just before the hour skipper Kevin Nolan had a chance to make the scoreline 3-1 but the young scouser had his effort cleared off the line after being set up well by substitute Ba and Kevin Davies.

The momentum during the second half seemed to fade and Wanderers manager Allardyce brought on strikers Delroy Facey and Jonathan Walters for Henrik Pedersen and Kevin Davies in the hope of freshening things up but the young duo where unable to capitalise on a weary home defence. Anthony Barness came into the fray with a quarter of an hour to go when he replaced Bruno N'Gotty.

And if the Djorkaeff injury wasnt enough for the Bolton coaching staff to worry about, disaster struck with only a few minutes remaining when Bolton born defender Nicky Hunt was strechered off with a leg injury after falling awkwardly when challenging for the ball. The young defender had played very well until that point and he was rushed to hospital for x-rays to determine the extent of the injury, Gareth Farrelly was brought on to replace the young Boltonian.

The home side never really threatened but the hearts of all connected with Bolton where in their mouths as in injury time Campo gave the ball away to Matthew Calascione but luckily Jussi Jaaskelainen stood firm and got his angles right to put the Maltese forward off, preventing the home side from getting a late equaliser.

If Bolton win against Floriana on Thursday in the Dennis Cauchi testimonial they will win the Floriana Cup for 2003.
