Who Next To Replace Phil Brown?

Last updated : 24 June 2005 By Mark Heys
With Phil Brown and Neil McDonald having both left for pastures new, it is important that Sam Allardyce appoints the correct personell to be by his side in Bolton's first ever UEFA Cup campaign.

Here we take a look at some of the possibles and probables.

JIMMY PHILLIPS

The former Wanderers left-back is already being tipped to move up as coach of the U19's to First Team Coach. Obviously this will be an internal appointment and will not cost Bolton very much. Phillips is in his first coaching job having hung up his boots as a player in the 2000-2001 season.

PETER REID

Good friend of Sam Allardyce and Bolton stalwart of the 1970's. Reid has generally been manager as opposed to coach, having served Manchester City, Sunderland, Leeds United and Coventry City in that role. In the latter days of his playing career he had spells as player-coach at Everton and QPR.

GARY SPEED

Current Bolton player who has expressed a desire to go into coaching and management. The former Leeds, Everton and Newcastle player was headhunted by Wales following the departure of Mark Hughes last season and would realish some coaching experience.

PHIL THOMPSON

Assistant to Gerard Houllier at Liverpool for six years and a former England international with a wealth of experience as a player for the Reds in domestic and European competition. Outsider due to comments which he made on SKY television about Bolton's employment of Premiership referee Mark Halsey.

JOHN CARVER

Former Newcastle United coach who was unlucky to be shown the door on two seperate occasions by the Magpies. Still relatively young in terms of coaching he was very highly rated by Sir Bobby Robson during his time in the North East.

JOHN McGINLAY

Bolton legend who is currently coaching in America. McGinlay has held managerial positions for non-league clubs such as Ilkeston Town and Grestley Rovers and would jump at the chance of being involved at a club which is very close to his heart.

BRIAN KIDD

Former Bolton striker of the early 1980's who was famed for being Sir Alex Ferguson's right hand man at Manchester United for many years. Kidd had an unsuccessful spell as manager of Blackburn Rovers but has held coaching positions with Leeds United and England. A recent cancer scare may force him out of contention.

BOBBY SAXTON

Veteran coach who was assistant to Peter Reid during their time together at Sunderland in the Premiership. Saxton has also worked as manager of Blackburn Rovers, Plymouth Argyle, York City and Exeter City and has held coaching positions at Newcastle United and Blackpool. He is currently on the scouting staff with the Wanderers.

ADRIAN HEATH

Ex-Burnley manager who has coached at Sheffield United, Leeds United, Sunderland and Coventry City. The former Everton and Stoke City striker has proved to be a useful member of the backroom staff at each of his clubs where he has also doubled up as Assistant manager and scout.

SAMMY LEE

Played a few games for the Wanderers in the early 1990's. Lee was a valued member of the Liverpool backroom staff for over a decade before moving into a role with the FA's team England coaching initiative last year. Has also worked under Sven Goran Eriksson for the national team.

TONY PARKES

Assistant Manager at Blackburn Rovers for many years. There was uproar when Rovers decided to release the Yorkshireman from his contract after long service. Was at Ewood Park when Rovers won the Premiership title back in 1995.

GWYN WILLIAMS

Former Chelsea coach who was released from his contract following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri. Williams was said to be a key member of the Stamford Bridge staff for many years bringing on players such as John Terry.

ASA HARTFORD

One time Bolton captain who was recently releived of his duties at Manchester City. Many where sad to see the Scotsman leave Eastlands having done such sterling work as coach as the reserves and youth team at City in nearly a decades service. Also coached at Shrewsbury, Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers.

GARY BRAZIL

Ex-Assistant to Sam Allardyce at Notts County, Brazil had a rather unsuccessful spell in the Magpies hotseat following Allardyce's decision to come to Bolton in 1999.
