Bolton Wanderers were voted as the North West team of the year last night in a BBC awards ceremony held at the Midland Hotel in Manchester.

Wanderers have surprised many people with their progress in the last 18 months having gone from relegation candidates to top ten material in a short space of time.

Sam Allardyce has twice steered the club to Premiership safety and last seasons eighth placed position was a record of the team's best ever finish in over four decades.

Midfielder Stelios Giannakopoulos also picked up an award for his exploits with European Champions Greece following their excellent displays in the Euro 2004 tournament in Portugal.

Bolton-born boxer Amir Khan also picked up a special award from BBC North West tonight after he became the youngest British representative at this year's Olympic Games in Athens going on to win a silver medal.
