Gillingham midfielder Nicky Southall has said it came as a shock when the Gills where drawn against former club Bolton Wanderers in the next round of the Carling Cup but the 31-year old admits he is looking forward to returning to the Reebok Stadium.

Ex-Hartlepool United and Grimsby Town player Southall joined Wanderers from the Gills in the summer of 2001 on a Bosman Free Transfer making 18 appearances in the Trotters return to top flight football scoring once in the 3-2 defeat by Newcastle United at St James Park. However he was one of a number of players sold by manager Sam Allardyce so the Wanderers boss could bring in players such as Jay-Jay Okocha and Ivan Campo to Bolton. Firstly he was loaned to Norwich City in September 2002 and then he cpmpleted a move back to the Preistfield Stadium two months later.

However Southall or "Trigger" as he is known by teammates is looking forward to the return to Lancashire.

“I cannot believe it, I'm shocked. I didn't believe I would ever be going back there. I really enjoyed my time there and it will be really emotional going back.

Southall will be hoping he can put his injury problems aside to return to Andy Hessanthalers team in time for the clash which is due to take place at the end of October.

“Hopefully I can get back to full fitness and get myself in the team for the game. It will be emotional for me, but I will enjoy the experience.

The midfielder also claimed an upset could be on the cards as he predicted his former club could rest a few of their star names.

“It's definitely winnable because they will probably put out a side of fringe players. That said, because I'm at the Gills they may play a stronger side.” he added
