Transfer Update

So far Sam Allardyce has only added El-Hadji Diouf to his team as he tries to build a squad capable of competing in the UEFA Cup.

Goalkeepers Sebastian Roth and Ali Al-Habsi have both been touted as possible replacements for Kevin Poole as Sam Allardyce searches for Jussi Jaaskelainens number two.

Defenders Jon McKain, Juanito, Alan Stubbs, Johan Radet and Cedric Varrault have all been targets for the Lancashire club along with Vincent Candela also snubbed the club after accepting a contract from Udinese. Sotirios Kyrgiakos is now Allardyces prime target but as yet no deal has been reached.

Modeste M'Bami, Dietmar Hamann and Abdoulaye Diagne-Faye have all been targeted as replacements for defensive midfielder and Spanish legend Fernando Hierro along with other more attacking options including Laurent Robert, Idan Tal and Luis Figo. Oliver Dacourt is another midfielder in talks at the moment but appears to favour an Italian alternative.

The elusive 20-goal-a-season striker hunt has begun again and two names that have appeared in the media recently include South African international Benni McCarthy and Juventus striker Marcelo Zalayeta. Both targets seem realistic but nothing concrete about the two players has emerged from the club.
