In a surprising turn-of events - Gillingham were hoping to take the player back to The Priestfield Stadium on loan but Sam Allardyce told them he was only interested in a permanent deal - Southall has after all been allowed out on loan.

Southall has yet to figure for Wanderers this season and with World Cup stars such as Jay Jay Okocha and Youri Djorkaeff currently occupying the midfield places in Allardyces team he feels it better to try his luck elsewhere.

Asked if he would like to remain at Carrow Road after his loan period has ended, Southall said: "I would like to sign on permanently, but we'll just have to see what happens."
