Scunthorpe United manager Brian Laws has sent Bolton Wanderers winger Jeff Smith back to the Reebok Stadium after the player failed to recover from a thigh injury picked up on his debut against Bury last month.

The 23-year old joined the Glanford Park ranks on a loan basis along with Bolton team mate Cleveland Taylor but the fact that the Middlesbrough born player has failed to recover from his injury coupled with the fact that experienced winger Peter Beagrie is now available for selection was a huge bearing on Laws decision to send Smith back to Bolton.

"He played in the first game and got a thigh injury which means he hasn't trained, We have sent him back to be re-evaluated and to get his fitness back, but I suspect he won't be ready by the time his loan runs out. That is unfortunate for us but that is the way it goes when you get loan players. Sometimes match fitness is one thing they haven't got." Laws said

Taylor however could have earned himself an extended deal with the Iron having impressed during his initial few weeks for Scunthorpe and Laws says he is hoping to keep the Jamaican Youth International at the club for a longer spell.

"We will certainly be reviewing extending the loan deal nearer the time but if Cleveland continues to do what he has been doing then there is no reason why we shouldn't extend it."
