Bolton Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce admits he was impressed by the performance of new signing Emerson Thome during the clubs 0-0 draw with Charlton Athletic on Saturday which was the clubs first clean sheet of the season and has backed the Brazilian to build on an impressive debut.

The former Sheffield Wednesday and Chelsea defender was signed just 24 hours before the game with the Addicks from Sunderland and the Bolton manager admitted that he handled the game very well despite not having seen much match action in recent months.

"It was an excellent debut by Thome and I hope he can continue in that vein" said Allardyce

"The lad is in magnificent condition and it doesn't look as though he has been out of the Premiership for as long as he has"

He also tipped Thome to follow the lead of fellow defender Florent Laville who made such a big impact in helping the club to survive a second successive season in the Premiership

"Maybe he will have as big an influence as Florent Laville did when he came here in January. We know what clean sheets are going to give us" he continued.
