Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce watched Vennegoor of Hesselink at the weekend and was thought to be closing in on a £5.4million swoop for the PSV Eindhoven striker.

However, it has now been claimed the whole financial package is beyond Allardyce and the gaffer will now turn his attentions to Tristan who is valued in the region of £2million.

The 30-year-old has had a fall out with Deportivo officials and, according to reports in Spain, Tristan, who was once one of the most feared strikers in La Liga, could be heading to the Reebok Stadium.
