While he has been able to consolidate his place as a regular in Fabio Capello's England side, Bolton have endured a torrid start to the season.
Cahill helped the Trotters to a crucial 3-1 win over Wigan at the weekend, and the centre-half admits it has been an up-and-down start to the campaign.
The former Aston Villa man admits it was hard not knowing where he would be playing, as up until transfer deadline day he was being linked with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea.
"It's been difficult in the sense that one minute you think you're staying and the next you think you're going," Cahill said.
"The worst thing about it is that everything is outside your control. It was strange in that sense and, for me, this season has been a bit of a rollercoaster.
"I was on a high at QPR, winning and scoring a goal, then on a low, losing and conceding a lot of goals after that.
"I was on a high playing for England, scoring against Bulgaria and keeping two clean sheets and then back down, playing Manchester United and conceding five."
Cahill also backed his boss Owen Coyle, insisting that he never considered that his job would be under threat despite their poor start to the season.
"I don't think his future is in doubt. You can see the run of games we've had," he said.
"And the way the top clubs have been performing this season, it was unlikely that we were going to get results."
