Portsmouth have signed Zambian striker Collins Mbesuma from South African side Kaizer Chiefs subject to a work permit.

The 21-year-old has emerged as one of African football's rising stars after claiming five goals in eight World Cup qualifiers for his country, and Portsmouth took advantage of Bolton boss Sam Allardyce's hesitation to reach an agreement for the striker.

However, doubts remain over whether Mbesuma will be awarded the necessary work permit to launch his career in The Premiership as Zambia have struggled to make the top 70 in the Fifa rankings over the past two years, a criteria required by the Home Office.
