Reports in the Nottingham press are claiming that Bolton Wanderers are at the front of the queue to sign Notts County striker Paul Heffernan after the Republic of Ireland striker refused to sign a new contract to keep him at Meadow Lane following the club's relegation to Division Three.

The 22-year old striker is available under the Bosman ruling but any interested club is expected to pay a fee due to the age of the player, The Magpies are estimated to want between £150,000 and £350,000 for the player who has scored 21 goals this season and Notts manager Gary Mills has allowed the player to move on after talks earlier on in the week.

"It is a blow, although it is not entirely unexpected." Mills admitted

"He had not accepted the contract we offered him so I just asked him after training yesterday if he had any intention of signing. He told me it was not a matter of finance and it wouldn't matter what we offered him. Clearly he is looking for a future elsewhere. Where that is, I really don't know. The important thing is it will not be with us. It is a blow, because he is a player we obviously wanted to hold onto. He has scored most of our goals this season."

Former Magpies manager Sam Allardyce is known to delve into lower league circles when strengthening the Bolton team. In previous years Nicky Southall, Delroy Facey and Glen Little have all made the step up to Premiership football from the Nationwide League.
