Manager Wants Change Of Focus

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce has told his side to focus on FA Cup progression as they look to gain a route into a European competition for next season.

Away wins at Ipswich Town and Oldham Athletic have seen the Wanderers progress to the fifth round of the competition and Allardyce feels the Trotters need to aim for a possible return to Cardiff's Millennium Stadium in May.

"The quickest way to Europe is through the FA Cup and it would be best if we went that way first and focused on that completely,"

"The squad has been capable, in terms of the number of players and the right amount of quality, which we have never had before, to get through two rounds away from home, even making half a dozen changes, And they have deserved to win both games." he told the Bolton Evening News

Squad rotation has certainly paid off for the Bolton manager as fringe players such as Tal Ben-Haim have come into the side and done a proficient job in recent weeks.

"Players like Tal Ben Haim and Anthony Barness have stepped in recently and we've done without the massive influence of Radhi Jaidi and our skipper, Jay Jay Okocha. For a while, we did without our main striker, Kevin Davies, but he's back now."

Khalilou Fadiga also received praise from his manager having returned for a two month injury lay off which threatened to end his Bolton career before it had really begun.

"We've had the emergence of Khalilou Fadiga, which is very encouraging and we now have a range of options in attack with Kevin, Henrik Pedersen, El-Hadji Diouf, Kevin Nolan and Ricardo Vaz Te. "

The manager is now satisfied with his squad hence the need for little re-adjustment during the transfer window. Experienced campaigners such as Henrik Pedersen, Fernando Hierro, Radhi Jaidi and Fadiga where all competent reserves for the game with Spurs in midweek and players who Allardyce says are more than capable of turning a game.

"There are plenty who can change situations for us and turn a game in our favour. I looked at my bench the other night and saw that I had players I could put on who could influence the game, if need be."

Could it be that this is the year for Bolton to make up for the disappointment Wembley 2000?. One would certainly hope so.
