The Latics join Walsall in the race to sign the former Republic of Ireland star who has had loan spells with rivals Burnley and Bradford City already this season whilst still under contract with Wanderers.
The 28-year old who has also had experience in the Premiership with Aston Villa and Everton joined Bolton in November 1999 initally on loan making over 70 appearances in four years scoring five times including the opening goal in the 2001 Play Off Final victory over Preston North End at the Millennium Stadium which Wanderers went on to win 3-0.
