The England Under-21 international suffered the injury during Saturday's 1-0 Premiership win over Portsmouth.
"I am deeply disappointed for Nicky," Bolton manager Sam Allardyce told the club website.
"The injury was sustained in the closing minutes of the match, and he could well miss our next five matches."
