Ex-Trotter Ritchie set for Walsall move

Former Bolton Wanderers defender Paul Ritchie has opened talks with Nationwide Division 1 side Walsall about a move to the Bescot Stadium having fallen out of favour at Manchester City.

The 28-year old Scottish international was a key part of the Wanderers defence following his move from Hearts in December 1999 where he helped the Wanderers to three Semi-Finals that year but once his short term contract at the Reebok was up he opted for a move back north of the border with Rangers but after only 71 days and no appearances at Ibrox he came back south to join Manchester City in the Premiership.

He was a regular for the Blues in 2000-2001 but a stomach injury at the end of that season has meant his opportunities under Kevin Keegan's management have been few and far between ever since, a loan move back to Bolton failed to materialise in 2002 and last season he had loan spells at Derby County and Portsmouth and its thought a move away from the City of Manchester Stadium will allow the former Jambos player to get regular football again.

New York/New Jersey Metrostars, Sheffield United and Pompey have all enquired about the players availability and he is expected to take a drop in wages to move to Walsall.

He could coincidently face the Wanderers next month as they face the Saddlers in the Carling Cup at The Reebok Stadium.
