Difficult Game For Excited Sam

Bolton boss Sam Allardyce is demanding the highest levels of professionalism from his players to guard against falling at the first European hurdle in the club's history.

Allardyce's side take a slender 2-1 lead into the return leg of their UEFA Cup first-round tie against Lokomotiv Plovdiv from Bulgaria this afternoon.

"The players are not as worried about this trip as I am, but the nearer it comes, the more they are looking forward to it," said Allardyce.

"It will be a difficult game tonight, under difficult circumstances, travelling to their place, with them having an away goal and us having a few injuries.

"The players at least understand we might be short of numbers in defence, a little weaker than normal, and that we will have to be very good in front of the back four to ensure Plovdiv do not get to that area.

"I don't quite know how the players are going to react. I hope they are as professional as they have been all season.

"We have to try to score the first goal to get us through to the group stages, which is what we are all looking for.

"To wake up on Friday and look forward to the draw to see whether we can be pulled out against any of the big boys, it would be very exciting for us and allow us to travel home with that under our belts.

"Then we could look forward to playing Wigan on Sunday and trying to beat our closest local rivals."

"The fact is we are travelling away in Europe and we only have a one-goal advantage," added Allardyce.

"We don't know what the atmosphere is going to be like, and whether there is going to be a full house.

"But whatever the conditions, I just hope we don't concede the first goal. That would be a devastating blow, and if it stayed like that then we are out.

"If they get that first goal I'm sure they wouldn't go for a second. They would try to protect their lead and force us to go forward.

"That means we could leave holes at the back, and if they then got a second it would be all over.

"But if we play to our best, and look at how difficult it has been for Premiership sides to score against us recently, and we take that mentality into this game, we should be okay."

Meanwhile, Jussi Jaaskelainen came fourth in September's Opta Player of the Month, losing out to Frank Lampard, Danny Murphy and Michael Essien respectively.
