The 36-year-old midfielder played through Wanderers' extra-time defeat at West Ham last week, then three days later he helped his side to a 2-0 victory over Sunderland in the Premiership.

Allardyce is delighted he can continue to rely on Speed as he pushes on for a top-six finish.

Allardyce said: "Gary's a great example to everybody because he never stops.

"He's always the first up when the ball breaks down, always the first to be running back. When the rest turn round and have a look, he's always on the move.

"He's a great example to every young player of the importance of recovering as quickly as possible and getting your rest later.

"He was never quick, but his experience and know-how means an awful lot to us. He rarely looks like the outstanding man, but he's a very crucial cog in the wheel."

Meanwhile, Bolton expect El-Hadji Diouf to make his return to first-team action against Middlesbrough on Sunday after a 10 week lay off with a hernia injury.

Sam Allardyce said: "El-Hadji has done a full week's training and will be available for selection at Middlesbrough."
