Coyle takes blame off Jaaskelainen

Facing a team reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Jonny Evans with 15 minutes remaining, the Trotters failed to hold out once Matt Taylor had missed a golden opportunity. Jaaskelainen allowed Nani's shot to slip from his grasp three minutes from time and could not recover his ground before Dimitar Berbatov pounced to net the winner.

"It is not my way to apportion blame," said Coyle. "We have gifted individual players and Jussi is one of them."

He added: "He has been magnificent for me and made one or two outstanding saves, so we have to give balance to it.

"Everything we do, we do it as a group."

Jaaskelainen's error condemned the Trotters to an eighth successive Old Trafford defeat and cost them the chance to edge closer to Liverpool in the battle for a top six slot.

Coyle certainly does not feel his side have any reason to feel bad about what happened, although he does hope a valuable lesson has been learned by the FA Cup semi-finalists.

"If someone had told me a year ago when I had just arrived at the club and we were favourites for relegation that we would come to Old Trafford and be disappointed to get nothing, we would have taken that," he said.

"But we also know we had a great opportunity to take points and it passed us by.

"For us the learning curve is to make sure when that opportunity comes round again, we take it."
