The Trotters are short on numbers with just 19 fit senior players available for the Barclays Premier League with West Brom at the Reebok Stadium on Boxing Day.
Coyle said: "We have the smallest squad in the Barclays Premier League but we don't moan about it, we get on with it. We would love to add the squad, we would love to help the group we have, add a bit of freshness. But that takes a number of things to come to fruition - player availability, finance, does the player want to come."
That figure will be reduced by at least one after the game as South Korea winger Lee Chung-yong joins his international colleagues in preparation for January's Asia Cup.
Further injuries would make the need for new signings when the transfer window opens imperative but Coyle says he will only move into the market if he can find the right players.
He continued: "There are a few boxes to be ticked before that could happen but it wouldn't ever stop us from looking to add the right type of player and the right type of character to the group.
"But I won't bring players in for the sake of numbers. If I bring players in it is because I believe they are going to help the squad we have got and improve the football club."
Coyle might also find, however, that the January transfer window brings problems - largely due to his own success. He has transformed Bolton's fortunes since taking charge in January and a number of players could attract interest from other clubs.
One such player is striker Johan Elmander, who has finally started to fire after two lean years but is out of contract next summer. The Swede, bought by Gary Megson for ¦pound;10million in 2008, managed just five goals in each of his first two seasons but already has eight this term.
"That is all down to Johan," said Coyle of the 29-year-old. "But my belief is Johan will be with us for the rest of the season anyway. I don't see that changing."
