Norwich City have completed the shock signing of Bolton Wanderers defender Simon Charlton after agreeing a two year deal with the experienced full back yesterday.

The 32-year old becomes the Canaries fourth signing of the close season following Paul Gallacher, David Bentley and Youssef Safri to Carrow Road as the City manager Nigel Worthington looks to build a squad capable of Premiership consolidation.

A fee of £250,000 has exchanged hands between the two clubs for Charlton's services with Worthington also likely to add a few more faces to his team before the season kicks off in under a months time.

Charlton joined Wanderers from Birmingham City on a Free Transfer in the summer of 2000 and in his first season helped the club to promotion via the Play Offs. His second full season with the club saw him voted as the 2002 Player of the Year whilst last season he moved from left back to centre back to cover for the injured Florent Laville and looked to have found a new lease of life in the heart of the defence.

Speaking about his new capture Worthington told the official Norwich website that he has aquired a player of vast experience who is a model professional.

“I am delighted to get a player of Simon’s quality. He is a very experienced Premiership player and a first class professional. Simon has great energy and great enthusiasm for the game and is a good, quality addition to the squad for the Premier League.” the Canaries boss said

"Charlie" as he became known by the Wanderers supporters made a total of 120 appearances for the Trotters over four years and last season appeared in the Carling Cup Final defeat to Middlesbrough at the Millennium Stadium.

BoltonMAD would like to wish Charlie all the best for the future.
