Charlton Relishes Saturday Showdown

Simon Charlton will come face to face with his old Bolton team mates for the first time on Saturday as Norwich City look to pull themselves towards Premiership safety.

Veteran defender Charlton left the Reebok Stadium for Norfolk this summer following four years with the Wanderers, and he says that his current employers must hold no fears going into the game against the Trotters this weekend.

"We have to be positive from the start and impose ourselves because at the end of the day we've got nothing to lose, There is no point in playing with any fear."

The 33-year old also hit back at the critics who have branded Bolton as a long ball, Wimbledon Crazy Gang style team ever since they faced the wrath of the Newcastle United boss Graeme Souness back in October.

"I don't think they use a particularly long-ball game, They have got good players and they can pass it around as well as anyone else. It's just because when they get into certain positions, Sam wants them to get the ball into the box. That's where you score most of your goals so it's common sense really, although it's amazing how many teams don't do it.

Charlton believes that only the top few teams can be choosy about how they play and says that the rest must work with the limited resources which are available to them, something which he feels his old club do very well with.

"It's not all about pretty football – Sam would be the first to admit he'd rather win ugly than lose pretty and I am in full agreement with him. We are not all Chelsea or Man United, where you can go and pay £10m for someone who is great in the air, quick and scores goals. The rest of us have to get by on what we have.

"You play to your strengths. Bolton are a physical team: they've got Kevin Davies up front who is almost an old-style centre-forward. He uses his physical presence to make life difficult for defenders and he is probably the best in the league at doing just that."
