Charlton & Djorkaeff doubtful for United opener

Bolton Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce is sweating on the fitness of both defender Simon Charlton and forward Youri Djorkaeff as the Wanderers gear up for their first game of the season against Manchester United at Old Trafford this coming Saturday.

Charlton is thought to have suffered further complications in his bid to comeback from a summer knee operation having been withdrawn at half time in last night's reserve defeat by Everton and now it seems the former Huddersfield Town, Southampton and Birmingham City player may be forced to sit out the opening game of the season.

Ricardo Gardner may have to move back from his prefered position as a winger into a more defensive role, a role in which he performed very well in Charlton's absence towards the end of last season. Anthony Barness can also play left-back too but it is thought the Wanderers boss would need the ex-Charlton Athletic player to fit in on the opposite flank.

Djorkaeff meanwhile is still suffering the effects of a cheekbone injury suffered on the clubs tour of Malta and as of yet it is unsure whether he will make the game against the Champions or not, if he does he will have to wear a specially constructed mask to protect the injury. Sam Allardyce has said he will make a decision on the former French international's injury later in the week.

"I am not sure if he is going to figure. We are constantly talking to Youri and his specialist to see if he can cope with the rigours of a Premier League match. If he wants to play then we may need to sort out protection for him. We are going through that process at the moment and we will find out later in the week if he is ready to play" said Big Sam.
