MATCH PREVIEW

It has been a year that Bolton and West Brom can reflect on with pride.

The Christmas period...can often define how the rest of the season unfolds. We've done well over the first half of the season and now have to kick on

Bolton defender Gary Cahill

The Trotters have made great strides since Owen Coyle was appointed as manager in January, reaching their highest league position for four years and evolving their style of play.

Albion were promoted in the summer with a club-record points tally and have peaked as high as fourth in the Premier League, winning at Arsenal and earning a draw at Old Trafford. Having augmented their game in the reverse manner to Bolton by adding steel to their silk, West Brom spent Christmas above the Premier League's bottom four for the first time in their history.

A West Brom win on Boxing Day would leave them only a point adrift of their seventh-placed hosts and with a game in hand. Bolton lost for only the fourth time last weekend, when they were thwarted by the save of the season from Sunderland's Craig Gordon to deny Zat Knight. With back-to-back trips to Chelsea and Liverpool after this game, Wanderers will need to provide inspiration of their own over the Christmas period.
