Bolton To Extend Fadiga Stay

Last updated : 22 February 2005 By Mark Heys
Khalilou Fadiga could extend his stay at Bolton Wanderers beyond this summer as the Trotters have an twelve month option on the Senegal international.

The 30-year old signed for Bolton in September after Italian giants Inter Milan decided to cut their losses on a player they had paid £5 million for just twelve months previously.

Fadiga never got the chance to play for the Milan club after an irregular heart defect was spotted by the clubs medical team. Bolton where more than willing to take a chance on the player though, after he was given the all-clear by medics early in 2004 to resume his career.

Unfortunately his heart problem's did not stop in Milan, there was huge concern back in October prior to Bolton's league cup encounter with Tottenham Hotspur as the player collapsed to the ground in the warm up. He was immediately sent to Belgium for a second operation to implant an automatic defibrilator which has now eliminated the threat of any further problems and allowed him to continue his career.

The former Club Brugge and Auxerre player has been back in action since January and Bolton chairman Phil Gartside beleives that it is only fair that the African is given an extension to his deal.

"He's a fantastic lad who lives for football. He's playing again, enjoying it and there's no reason why we shouldn't see a lot of him.

"We might have to wait another year to get the best out of him when he's had a full pre-season and he's really ready.

"He's already on an option for next year. We usually try to take out an option on any player we sign so they can carry on. It's up to Sam at the end of the day but the option is ours."

Florent Laville, Anthony Barness, Kevin Poole, Julio Cesar and Fernando Hierro are still awaiting news on their futures. The five players are out of contract in the summer and are yet to be offered fresh terms.
