It has been confirmed that Bolton Wanderers have signed 29-year old Sporting Lisbon striker Mario Jardel on a two-year deal subject to a medical having beating off competition from a number of clubs for his services.

The Brazilian born attacker who won't need a work permit as he holds a Portuguese passport, has struggled with personal problems over the last year or so culminating in Lisbon willing to release the player for around 1,800,000 euros, but Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce is confident that the former Galatasary and FC Porto player is the man to get the club the 15 or 20 goals a season which the current strikers lack, having scored goals prolifically wherever he has been.

"Signing a player of Jardel's calibre and class underlines our determination to progress in the Premier League this season. He has an excellent track record in European football and i am confident he can ressurect his career here at the Reebok Stadium" said the delighted Bolton manager.

"His goals per game ratio is second to none anywhere in the world. We have found a striker who is going to score goals for us on a regular basis. I'm looking forward to seeing him link up with the rest of the players"

"To bring in a player of Jardel's quality takes time, and we have been very patient in trying to recruit the ideal player to bolster our squad, it shows our great determination through long and protracted negotiations" added the Bolton boss

Jardel was equally as pleased to have linked up with the club when he said "I'm looking forward to playing for Bolton Wanderers. This is the opportunity i need to ressurect my career, i still have the ability to score lots of goals and i want to become a hero in Bolton and a success in the Premier League."

"I have always wanted to play in England and i consider it to be the best league in the world. Bolton is a great club full of quality players. The reputation that the club has around Europe is positive with the likes of Jay-Jay Okocha, Youri Djorkaeff and Ivan Campo we can progress into a winning club"

It brings an end to a long search for a quality front man and twice Golden Boot winner Jardel is yet another big name signing to enhance Bolton's reputation as a Premier League club following on from the signings of Ivan Campo, Youri Djorkaeff and Jay-Jay Okocha in the last 18 months.
