Tony Pulis's side were three goals up after half an hour yesterday and scored two more in the second period to run out 5-0 winners.

The pre-match odds on that scoreline were 125-1. The Potteries side will face Manchester City in the final on May 14 after a result which left Bolton shell-shocked.

Captain Kevin Davies said: 'I'm ashamed and embarrassed - that was not the real Bolton.

'The FA Cup is always something I've dreamed of winning. I was hoping it would be a day to remember but now it will be a day I'll never forget.'

An emotional Pulis revealed that taking Stoke back to Wembley next month would be especially poignant for him. He said: 'It will mean a lot to lead a team out in the final.

I've lost my mum and dad - I lost mum this year - and we'd always sit round the telly and watch the FA Cup final.'

Pulis also hoped the manner of Stoke's victory might change the perception of his side as a route-one team.

He added: 'There will always be that stigma, but getting to a final will help, and being able to show what the players are capable of is fantastic.'

Stoke winger Jermaine Pennant said: 'It's a massive victory and it just shows how much the club's pushing forward. People talk about our game-play but to win 5-0 in a semi-final, we've got to be doing something right. We're not as bad as people think.'

Team-mate Matthew Etherington said: 'We get our knockers and this was our day to prove them wrong. We are used to being the underdogs. We will be the underdogs in the final, too. Bring it on.'

Bolton boss Owen Coyle admitted his players had let themselves down after they failed in their attempt to reach the final for the first time since 1958.

He said: 'We're all hurting. I feel sorry for the fans because they deserved better.

'Sometimes a performance drops one or two rungs, but we were down at the bottom of that ladder.

'There were too many players who didn't give a performance to match their ability.

'We presented the goals we lost, we capitulated and it's not good enough.'
