Bolton boss Sam Allardyce says that The Trotters will never be able to break into the elite of English football and are instead targeting a stable Premiership existence.
"We don't want to get to the next level at Bolton because we know we can't," said Allardyce.
"We're not going to be daft enough to say we could.
"We could have finished fourth last year and maybe we missed the only chance we'll ever get to do that.
"Our target is to become a fixture in this league like Charlton but that will not happen if we overspend, and spending a fortune is the only way we'll get there.
"We just haven't got the millions."
Allardyce says he has now fully accepted that the mission of winning silverware at The Reebok Stadium is a mammoth task, and that he may look to retire at the end of his current deal unless interest from a big outfit materialises.
"It is frustrating because I am ambitious, but that's out of my hands," Allardyce continued.
"In the end if anybody else moves in for me it will be because this club has sustained its success.
"Last year was the best year I've had since I joined the club, but even then there was a spell where we lost six games on the trot.
"It is frustrating knowing I can't win the league but I accept that.
"I want to win the FA Cup, Uefa Cup and the Carling Cup and finish in the top eight but I know that's not going to happen.
"Will I always be here? No, because I'm going to retire one day.
"Going on as long as Sir Alex Ferguson or Sir Bobby Robson doesn't appeal to me.
"I still intend to see out my contract though, I've done six years and there are four more to go.
"Then I might walk away because there's more to life than the pressures of football, but you can never say never.
"If someone offered me the Manchester United job or the Chelsea one in four years' time then obviously I could change my mind."
