Big Sam Speaks About Borgetti And Davies

Bolton Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce admits he can't play in-form striker Jared Borgetti together upfront with Kevin Davies.

Borgetti impressed in the Carling Cup win against West Ham and Allardyce said: "I think it was very good to get Jared into a Premiership-type match. Even though it was a Carling Cup fixture, it was two Premiership sides.

"It was two Premiership sides not at full pelt, I must admit, but it was close to it. And I think for him to see the size and the strength of the players he's going to play against, it's something that's great for him to get used to.

"But the important thing for us is that we know that if we provide opportunities for him in the box, he will score goals. That's going to be our main aim.

"Kevin Davies is fantastic for us in the front line, but the pressure for Kevin is to get one or two more goals himself. That's his challenge and all in all, there is some good competition."

Bolton's aerial approach has proved hugely successful with Davies leading the line, but, as evidenced on occasions against the Hammers, they are futile with Borgetti in attack.

Allardyce admitted a change in tactics will be necessary to accommodate the Mexican.

He added: "We'll have to say that maybe outside the box he won't be as effective as Kevin Davies but inside the box he's going to be more effective.

"The players have to take that responsibility on board when he plays and use his strengths and not ask him to do too much of what he's not as good at.

"And that way we can produce a number of goals from him that can be key. We've got 50-odd games this year and Kevin Davies is not going to play 50-odd games."

The ideal scenario would be to play the two together but Allardyce added: "I don't think they match up particularly well.

"We wouldn't throw it out of the window completely - we might try it in training and see where we go - but everyone else's understanding of our system means that we couldn't really do it."

Meanwhile, former Bolton defender Emerson Thome is joining Derby County.

Thome, 33, is teaming up again with former Bolton assistant Phil Brown at Derby on a month's loan.

Thome has lost his place in the Wigan side to veteran pair Arjan De Zeeuw and Stephane Henchoz.
