Bolton Wanderers defender Anthony Barness hopes to put a season of disappointment behind him and hopes his versitility will help him stake a claim in the side for the rest of the season.

The 31-year old has figured in both the right and left back positions this season and an injury to fellow defender Simon Charlton during Saturday's draw with Aston Villa paves the way for the Londoner to bid for a more permanent place in the Trotters starting eleven.

Barness has made over 90 appearances for the club since his Bosman Free Transfer move from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2000 and looked to be heading for a loan move to West Ham United in the winter only to be recalled a day later but the dependable defender says he is hoping to put his initianal frustrations behind him to stay in the team for the rest of the campaign.

"It has been frustrating being out of the team but all you can do is your best when you do get in. It was a bad result at Boro and I was hoping it wouldn't reflect on me when changes were made for the Villa game. Fortunately, I did start and we battled well for a hard-earned point" Barness said

"There are times when you get disappointed at being out of the team and times when I thought that I had a particularly strong case to be starting and wasn't.
I don't mind which fullback position I play which was just as well because I had to do both against Villa. But it gives me options and the West Ham business is long forgotten.

"I haven't had many games so I feel fine and, hopefully, that will be on the plus side for me when the manager is thinking about resting players. I want to play the rest of our games."
