Allardyce upset over choice of ref

Allardyce feels Don was wrong to appoint Riley to referee the game because Riley was involved in controversy at the Reebok Stadium just 11 months ago when he sent off Paul Warhurst and Dean Holdsworth in four first-half minutes in a Premier League game with Leicester last year.

On Saturday Riley showed Bruno N’Gotty a red card after just 20 minutes of the basement battle with West Brom, although Riley might have got it right over N’Gotty’s sending-off.

Allardyce said: “I don’t think Philip Don should have sent him (Riley) to do this game.

“Anything Mr Riley did was wrong in our fans’ eyes, everything he did was booed whether it was right or wrong and the hostile environment affected everybody.”

Allardyce believes referees could benefit from being kept away from certain venues for a “cooling-off” period if they have been involved in particular controversy.

He added: “They shouldn’t return for a period of time.

“We’ve got enough full-time referees so would it not be better for all concerned, particularly with the type of game we had on Saturday, which was an identical situation to Leicester last year.”
