"It was an inspirational performance from our captain," said Allardyce after the 1-0 win at White Hart Lane.

"We struggled to get possession in the first 10 minutes then all of a sudden he decided to turn the magic on, and that lifted the whole of our side.

"Once he started showing that ability we passed the ball a lot better and a lot quicker and once we got at Tottenham's back four we caused them quite a few problems and in the end got what we deserved.

"I would say that was the best Jay-Jay has played this season. His work-rate has been exceptionally good but the top line quality of his ability hasn't shown as much as it did today and hopefully he'll continue that as will the rest of the side.

"We have set a standard and we mustn't waste a rare Premiership victory away going into next week, we have to take it on another level. My 11 players played to their best today and they always have to do that for us to win a Premiership game.

"On chances created and shots on goal we dominated the game and that is pleasing because it has been a torrid place for me on the last three occasions.

"It has to be a turning point for us all."
