Walsall Preview

Last updated : 24 September 2003 By Mark Heys
Bolton Wanderers take a break from Premiership football tommorow as they take on First Division side Walsall in the Carling Cup Second Round.

Two years ago the sides took part in a thrilling 4-3 encounter at the Reebok Stadium which the Wanderers won in extra time thanks to a goal by Henrik Pedersen. Japanese striker Akinori Nishizawa scored on his full debut for the club whilst Dean Holdsworth and ex-Saddler Michael Ricketts where also on the scoresheet. Colin Hendry was also sent off during the second half of the match which took place on the same day as the tragedy in the United States.

For the game tommorow Sam Allardyce will do his usual yet much critisised shake up by resting the likes of Jussi Jaaskelainen, Emerson Thome, Ivan Campo and Youri Djorkaeff for the game. Kevin Poole, Anthony Barness and Per Frandsen could come into the starting eleven to replace them whilst the Bolton manager has also hinted he will be picking Mario Jardel and Ibrahim Ba for the game against the Midlands outfit.

Walsall manager Colin Lee may have to do without Danny Hay and Darren Wrack for the trip to Lancashire after both picked up injuries during Saturday's League defeat by Millwall. Zigor Aranalde and Paul Merson may be recalled to the side having missed the game at the New Den through injury. Former Wanderers defender Paul Ritchie could also feature for the Saddlers despite an enquiry into his conduct following Saturday's game. Youngsters Daryl Taylor and Matty Fryatt will also be included.
